Poetry Friday

Poetry Friday is hosted today by Author Amok.

For Poetry Friday: "If Not For The Cat: Haiku by Jack Prelutsky with paintings by Ted Rand.

Young readers grades K- 3 will find a delightful introduction to this lovely form of poetry in Prelutsky's seventeen verses that offer a glimpse into the mind and heart of assorted animals.  Framed as first person riddles, each poem challenges the reader to identify the speaker. Quiet and thoughtful as one might expect, the verses also offer the audience an opportunity to reflect. Rand's elegant drawings and watercolors find a perfect balance with the careful use of vocabulary. The appeal of animals coupled with the skilled language make these poems an excellent choice for introducing Haiku to students and could easily inspire young writers to a similar effort.
